Practice Calendar

Intro

This is for those of you who would like to build a great habit of daily guitar practice. It is empowering to know that you can accomplish your guitar goals, so long as you keep coming back to your guitar practice. It doesn't matter how long it takes, enjoy the journey!

The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time.

How To Use

Simply get a marker pen and stick a big cross in each day's box that you take the time to practice. After a few days, you will notice that you have begun to build a streak of crosses. This is fantastic! You will find that there is power in building your streak and making guitar practice part of your daily schedule.

The longer your streak, the less likely you will want to break it. You will end up making time to practice so as to keep from breaking it.

Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.

Robert Collier

Key Points:

  1. Decide on a set amount of time that you feel you can commit to playing your guitar each day.
  2. After fulfilling your daily practice quota, stick a cross in that day's box.
  3. Keep your practice calendar on the wall in the room you practice in or just next to your guitar (in a place where you will see it often).
  4. Note the length of your longest streak during that month at the top of the calendar.
  5. Continue your streak across multiple calendars!

What if I break my streak?

If for some uncontrollable reason that you do break your streak, do not worry! Have the courage to start again and smash your previous record. You know you'll feel fantastic when you do!

From experience, it does feel bad when you just can't squeeze in your practice and therefore end up breaking your streak that you've worked hard to build. It's as though you've let yourself down. All is definitely not lost though! Look back at how far you have come with daily practice; there will surely be things that you can play now that you couldn't last month, last week or even a few days ago.

Don't let a slight hiccup put you off course. The best thing that you can do now is to pick up your guitar, or commit to a time when you can, today.

Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little.

Further Ideas

Track Your Focus

Instead of a big cross, take note of what you focused on each day. This will give you clarity as to where you should ideally focus your practice time in future sessions. For example, if you are learning multiple songs, use it to keep track of your progress on each one.

Use Colour

You could use different colours to highlight where your attention has been. For example, put a red cross in the box for one particular song that you are currently learning, and a blue cross for a different song.

Weekly Reviews

Take a little time to look back on your week and feel good about your accomplishment. You could take note of what you have learnt and also what you plan to learn and practice the following week.

Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. But this, so far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and glory of the climb.

Winston S. Churchill
